Côte d'Ivoire's clean second-place route
Côte d'Ivoire finished Group E level with Germany on six points, but the table did not feel identical. Germany's 7-1 opener against Curaçao created the goal-difference cushion; Côte d'Ivoire's work was narrower and more practical.
That separated Côte d'Ivoire from Ecuador in the group stage. The knockout answer is now harsher: two clean sheets and direct attacking threat carried them into the bracket, but Norway's 2-1 win ended the tournament.

Why the Ecuador opener shaped the whole group
Côte d'Ivoire's Group E was decided less by one spectacular night than by the order of the right wins. The 1-0 opener against Ecuador immediately put them in the top-two lane, and it became more valuable every time Ecuador later tried to repair the table.
The Germany defeat in Toronto stopped Côte d'Ivoire from taking control of first place, but it did not damage the route as long as the final match was handled properly. The 2-0 win over Curaçao did exactly that: six points, second place, no dependence on third-place math.
Coach and outlook
Fae's side came through the group by keeping the tournament simple. Côte d'Ivoire protected the box well enough in the wins, accepted that the Germany match would be the hardest control test, and made sure the Curaçao closer did not become a nervous scoreboard watch.
The Norway loss showed the same lesson in a harsher way: Côte d'Ivoire can make matches uncomfortable without long spells of perfect possession, but the knockout level still demanded more calm on the ball and more control after the first transition.
Squad update
FIFA confirmed the final tournament squads on June 2, 2026, so Côte d'Ivoire's World Cup list is official rather than provisional.
Selection suspense is over now. The core questions are whether the midfield can keep enough control around physical games, whether the wide runners can turn recoveries into real chances, and whether the back line keeps the clean-sheet level that carried the Ecuador and Curaçao wins.
